Robert's body began dissolving internal organs from extreme ketoacidosis. After hyperventilating uncontrollably, he passed out at the VA hospital check-in desk. The hyperventilating was his body attempting to expel carbon dioxide from organs dissolving - he was expelling 95% while most people only manage 40% before dying from asphyxiation. During his clinical death, he was taken to what appeared like a black hole's event horizon, seeing swirling gases flowing into a central black disc with an accretion cloud distorted by intense gravity. An invisible path led into the black hole, which he knew would be one-way. Suddenly he received a universal knowledge download - all his life questions were answered, anger dissolved, and he felt true happiness and peace. An ancestor appeared beside him in a form-fitting black suit with copper-colored metal plating and skull-like helmet. The being said he was from Earth's first colonists from another world, chosen to guide Robert back due to no emotional connection. He warned Robert about potential government experimentation on his body and advised future death should be on his own terms. Robert awoke two weeks later from a coma, with doctors saying his consciousness seemed elsewhere during that time.
