Catherine was involved in a road accident in November 1984, being hit by a large van while crossing the street. During surgery to treat her injuries, she died while under anesthesia and required resuscitation. Upon dying, she left her body and saw the operating theater while floating upward, observing everything as she rose through total darkness. She found herself in a bubble surrounded by complete darkness, initially scared she might remain in nothingness forever. She became aware of other deceased people also rising at different stages depending on when they had died. Hearing her name being repeatedly called with instructions to come back, she returned to the operating theater but not immediately to her body. After continued calling, she re-entered her body and woke up, having to settle back into it. The experience was somewhat distressing as she thought she was going up to be judged and might be found unworthy. The experience taught her to let things be by putting them in God's hands.
