Rachel experienced diabetic ketoacidosis leading to sepsis, respiratory failure, pulmonary edema, double pneumonia, and cardiac arrest requiring CPR. She was on a ventilator and feeding tube during her critical illness. During a code in her hospital room, she felt light and looked down to see her lifeless body surrounded by family while doctors worked to revive her. From above, she observed the medical team's resuscitation efforts. Looking up, she saw a bright white light and began reaching for it when two figures stopped her - an older man with a food-stained shirt and an older woman holding a gourd, whom she recognized as her deceased grandparents, "Nana and Papa." They told her, "It's not your time, Rachel Rose," and softly pushed her back into her body. She regained consciousness after this encounter. The experience was distressing, leaving her feeling confused, sad, and hurt, though she also felt some relief and calmness. She understood from everyone's reactions that she had died. The experience reinforced her Jewish faith and she has shared it with everyone she knows, experiencing large life changes as a result.
