Oscar J, a chemistry university student, was preparing firecrackers when a massive explosion blinded him temporarily and blew off three fingers on his left hand. With severe abdominal wounds and massive blood loss, he was rushed to the emergency room. As his pain gradually disappeared, his body became increasingly light until he no longer felt it at all. He perceived himself lying in the operating room, observing doctors and nurses talking while he was dying. His consciousness was absorbed as if by a gigantic vacuum, accompanied by immense happiness and peace. He experienced being drawn through this vacuum toward an unusually bright, immense light. Oscar fell into a coma for three days, during which doctors told his parents he was in critical condition and might die. When he regained consciousness a week later and recovered his sight, he felt reluctant to return to this world because of the profound peace he had experienced on the other side. Remarkably, his girlfriend sensed his distress at the moment of the accident despite being far away, feeling his presence and knowing something terrible had happened. The experience eliminated his fear of death and gave him deep respect for all living creatures.
