On January 1, 1994, Candace underwent lengthy spine surgery and experienced clinical death when pain medication administered during recovery caused her to stop breathing. A nurse had to administer resuscitation drugs to restart her breathing. The experience has provided purpose and meaning throughout subsequent medical challenges including pancreatic cancer.
During the NDE, Candace walked apprehensively through a dark tunnel toward a very bright light, hearing faint orchestrated music. As she moved through the tunnel, she saw a little boy to the right motioning her to come to him, whom she believed was the child she had lost during pregnancy years before. She walked faster trying to reach him, seeing beautiful wildflowers swaying to the music at the tunnel's end. When she desperately wanted to touch the child, her feet became heavy and she couldn't move, overwhelming her with frustration. She woke suddenly with the nurse administering resuscitation drugs at her bedside. Initially, the experience caused anger, disappointment, and resentment about being sent back, questioning her life's purpose. Over the years, Candace has come to understand she still has purpose on Earth. The experience gave her a glimpse of the afterlife and eliminated her fear of death. She has shared her story with countless others, finding it rewarding to help them. When her 35-year-old son died two years ago, she held his hand as life support was removed, telling him not to be afraid and to let go to be with God.
