In April 1998, three-year-old Bryan was struck by a yellow pickup truck while playing outside. He was retrieving a rope from the street when the truck hit him at full speed, knocking him unconscious into the middle of the street. He was comatose for several days and required facial reconstructive surgery for a three-inch scar on his left cheek from the impact.
Bryan vividly remembers his spirit leaving his body without looking down at what happened. As he floated toward the sky feeling incredibly light, he experienced indescribable pleasure and bliss. Moving upward, he saw a giant orb of light that he believed was the Sun up close. He encountered Mother Mary wearing white and blue robes like the Lady of Fatima, initially with hands clasped as if praying or cradling an unseen baby. Time seemed to freeze briefly as his spirit approached her. Suddenly she looked up and opened her arms as if ready to take him in. He describes this as the most vivid experience of his life. The encounter with Mary was characterized by feelings of bliss, peace, and being welcomed with a sense of wholeness. Bryan woke in a helicopter with his broken skull vibrating on a backboard, followed by surgery and a month of hospitalization. The experience made him curious about spirituality and strengthened his faith as a born-again Christian, though it also led to other spiritual experiences including seeing ghosts.
