On April 9, 2009, Brittany was in a severe car accident when a red truck hit their vehicle, causing it to roll five times across the highway. She suffered a severe head wound with blood covering her eyes, was resuscitated with defibrillators in the ambulance, and remained in a coma for three days with a breathing tube. She physically died three times during the ordeal.
During her first death experience, she had a blissful, peaceful out-of-body experience looking down at herself being operated on. Her grandmother and great-grandmother were present, smiling at her without speaking. She felt sucked back into her body when resuscitated. During the second death experience when the breathing tube removal failed, she again viewed her body from beside the hospital bed, watching staff reinsert the tube. She felt completely at peace with her life and everything she had done. Her grandmothers appeared again, and she felt the need to go with them as guides to her next life, though still feeling a pull to her physical body. When she looked back at her grandmothers, they had vanished. She experienced peaceful, numbing blissfulness before entering another coma for four days. Upon final awakening, her grandmother appeared at the foot of her bed, nodded as if confirming she made the right choice to stay, then vanished. Brittany believes they appeared not to take her but to help her choose life, though she sometimes wishes she had gone with them.
