Nick drowned during a swimming lesson at age 4 when he tried to swim with one hand like other students and went underwater with his mouth open. He sank slowly watching fluorescent lights fade to black. After brief life review images, he was jerked to the corner of the room where he watched his mother rush to the pool fence screaming and pointing. He saw the teacher turn, dive dolphin-style, then swim toward his body and lift him to the poolside for CPR while other parents held his mother back. The memory was completely repressed for 8 years until a second near-drowning at age 12 triggered full recall. When he told his mother, her description of the building and events matched his memory exactly. He used to lie on pool bottoms looking up as a child, which made sense after recovering the memory. He regressed in toilet training until age 12. The experience eliminated his fear of death and led him to embrace love and compassion, though he no longer believes in a creator God.
