Michael attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head on May 14, 2017, after months of alcoholism and grieving his father's death. He heard "code blue" being called repeatedly and found himself viewing his body being wheeled down the hospital corridor from above. While out of body, he traveled through a tunnel where a robed figure extended his hand saying "Join me brother in paradise." Michael declined and returned to his body. He woke up missing the right side of his skull, later developed a brain abscess causing hemiparesis, and was told he'd never move again. Through years of recovery, he regained almost full mobility despite losing his prefrontal cortex. The experience transformed him from a suicidal alcoholic to someone who values life. He now identifies as Wiccan after his late husband convinced him magic is real, and he reports having innate healing powers. He describes himself as "bullet resistant" and regenerating "like Wolverine."
