Matthew was involved in a double car accident on February 17, 2000. His family's car hit ice and rolled over with no injuries initially. However, another car lost control on the same ice patch and struck Matthew and his brother after they crawled out, then crashed into their overturned vehicle. Matthew lost consciousness and had an out-of-body experience where he met a man in white in a bright room with no walls. The man told him it wasn't his time and he had something important to do. Matthew observed his father and coworkers from above, watching his father cradle his body and cry. He prayed for his family and asked not to die in front of his father. When he returned to his body, he experienced intense pain and woke up in the hospital. He suffered multiple injuries including broken teeth, back, arm, and torn muscles requiring surgeries. The experience changed his relationship with death and life purpose.
