On May 7, 2005, Birdie was the victim of a criminal attack by someone she knew who had a psychotic break. The attacker attempted to stab her in the head with a screwdriver. She was knocked unconscious during the initial assault and experienced a near-death event while someone was actively trying to kill her. The attack was life-threatening and she barely survived by moving at the last second when the screwdriver came down, causing it to shatter tile next to her head instead of penetrating her skull.
During the attack, Birdie saw a flash of light then found herself hovering above her body, viewing the entire scene from above. Time seemed to stop. She watched people kneeling around her trying to help and saw herself lying there. From above, she yelled at herself to wake up and move. She experienced a brief life review that went by so fast she couldn't fully catch the scenes, though she knew they were from her life and wished she could see it again. She felt the slideshow was unnervingly short. She was then above her body again yelling at herself "MOVE! MOVE! MOVE!" She saw the screwdriver coming down for her head in extreme slow motion from her body's perspective on the ground. The primary observations were seeing herself and the scene from above while unconscious, and perceiving the weapon coming down in slow motion. She could see everything from above with time to assess what was happening, representing the highest level of consciousness during the experience. She also experienced both visual and auditory elements, hearing "NO!" when being pulled back. She somehow moved and the screwdriver slammed down right next to her head, shattering the tile. The experience profoundly changed her life over the decades since, making her more spiritual, braver, willing to take risks, and focused on small acts of grace. She developed increased empathy to the point of feeling what others feel when entering a room. The NDE convinced her that death isn't scary and heaven awaits, transforming her from someone who found holidays a drag to showing up in an elf outfit.
