Mark had returned to work after two weeks in the hospital for pneumonia and atrial fibrillation (AFib). While in a meeting with his boss, the room suddenly began shifting up, down, and sideways. He looked up trying to find something to focus on while the room was moving, then lost consciousness. He subsequently spent 4 weeks in the hospital recovering from this life-threatening event. The experience left him profoundly changed, creating a void in his emotional life that persists months later.
During his unconscious state, Mark found himself in a tunnel experiencing a floating sensation similar to being in water. He saw himself lying back in the chair where he had been sitting, observing his body from outside. The tunnel experience brought him profound peace with no pain whatsoever. Though he describes limited sensory changes - his vision remained unchanged and the tunnel sounds were normal - the dominant experience was one of incredible peace and pleasantness. He saw light in the distance within the tunnel but did not reach it before returning to his body. The most significant aspect of Mark's experience is not what happened during the NDE, but what happened afterward. Upon returning home after 4 weeks of recovery, he felt completely empty and void of all feelings. Eight months later, this emotional void persists. He lost his sense of purpose and feels lost in daily life, unable to feel emotions for anyone or anything. All his former hobbies have been abandoned as he struggles to find himself again. He describes sitting in rooms full of family and friends feeling like a stranger who doesn't belong anymore. Mark's experience challenges common assumptions about NDEs always being positive. While the experience itself was entirely pleasant and peaceful, the aftermath has been devastating to his emotional life. He describes being unable to feel feelings as "a lonely road" and considers the changes definitely not for the better. Despite knowing intellectually the difference between dreams and reality, and being certain his experience was real, the lasting effect has been a complete emotional disconnection from life rather than the enhanced meaning many experiencers report.
