Maria had been feeling ill and in pain for weeks, with the only food she could tolerate being shrimp cocktail despite being an ovo-lacto vegetarian who didn't even like shrimp. About five days before her NDE, a doctor injected her with an enormous syringe of Valium for the pain. On the day of the emergency, the pain became intense and she went to the hospital emergency room. While having an X-ray taken, she fell to the floor and passed out. It turned out she had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy with massive internal bleeding. The doctor later told her she had at most an hour and a half to live had she not been in the hospital.
During her unconscious state, Maria saw a tunnel with a bright white light at the end that beckoned her. She felt no pain and headed toward the light. Something, possibly a feminine being, was drawing her toward the light and welcoming her. She felt very comforted and wanted to continue moving forward. However, she was repeatedly told to go back, which she resisted. The being kept calling her back despite her desire to continue toward the light. After continuing to resist returning to her body, she finally came to with the X-ray technician screaming her name and hitting her arm. Maria woke up extremely disappointed that she couldn't finish her journey toward the light. She was immediately anesthetized and taken to surgery where doctors discovered the ectopic pregnancy. When they opened her abdomen, blood poured out onto the table and floor from extensive internal bleeding. Though she had no out-of-body experience, she oddly knew about the ectopic pregnancy before the doctor told her, suggesting some form of awareness during her unconscious state. The experience occurred 41 years ago but remains crystal clear in her memory, more vivid than other life events from that time. She describes it as one of the clearest experiences of her life, definitely real and not a dream. The NDE made her realize life won't last forever and prompted major life changes including divorce, returning to school, completing degrees, and starting a new career. She became more compassionate toward others and spends more time contemplating life, death, and meaning, though she remains agnostic.
