About a year after being shot, Malcom attempted suicide by ingesting what he believed was fentanyl - three large rocks of the substance after seeing two other people pass out from small amounts. His intention was clear: he figured there wasn't enough Narcan in the Midwest to bring him back. Emergency services were called and first responders managed to revive him. Upon arrival at the hospital, his heart rate had dropped to a critical 16 beats per minute, placing him on the brink of death.
Before being revived, Malcom experienced something he describes as the most amazing experience of his life. He felt Beings taking him somewhere extraordinary, though he didn't see them directly. The environment was intensely bright, as if he was being lifted through beautiful, luminous mist or clouds toward an even brighter light source. He understood he was being taken to "the most amazing place imaginable" by these unseen Beings. The predominant emotion was not happiness or joy, but something he struggles to name - perhaps best described as acceptance, a profound knowing that everything was going to be okay. The experience gave him insights about the nature of death and existence. He now believes that the brilliant, unearthly light might be more than just light - possibly knowledge being inserted into a non-functioning brain. He felt the presence of what he calls angels, beings that were guiding him toward where souls go after death. The sense of peace and acceptance was overwhelming, completely removing any fear of death. Upon waking in the hospital, Malcom was deeply saddened that he couldn't complete his journey to wherever the Beings were taking him. However, he came to understand that he's here for a reason - to save more lives, though he's still discovering how to fulfill this purpose. The experience reinforced his spiritual beliefs and convinced him that death is not something to fear but rather embrace as part of the journey to the next realm. He now tries to be a better person and make others' lives better, seeing this as his earthly mission.
