At age 4, Luis was accidentally shot in the brain, causing him to lose consciousness and significant blood loss. He was on the ground for an hour before the ambulance arrived. During transport to the hospital, his heart stopped for approximately 10 minutes and he was declared clinically dead. After emergency surgery where surgeons could not remove the bullet (now lodged under his pineal gland), he entered a coma for 7 days.
During his coma, Luis found himself in a heavenly realm running barefoot through an immense meadow filled with extraordinary flowers that had amazing fragrances. He saw majestic snow-capped mountains, an intensely blue sky with warm sunshine, and a stream with fish. The central feature was a large oak tree that seemed protective and majestic. When Luis embraced the tree, he felt its sap flowing through his veins and saw the tree's entire history - the birds that had lived there, the storms it had weathered, and all who had visited it. This connection gave him profound peace and made him aware that he was part of universal consciousness. Luis saw a train passing with empty carriages and a woman with long hair waving at him from a window. He then noticed a Roman-style arch from which intense light was emanating. As he approached this gateway of light, he felt himself being hugged from behind by a woman whose face he did not see. She whispered in his left ear that it was not his time yet. This intervention prevented him from crossing through the arch into the light. Luis awoke from his coma on December 11, 1976 at 10 AM. The experience left him with lasting effects including enhanced intuition and the ability to perceive things about others and foresee future events. He kept the experience hidden for over 10 years before telling his mother, and waited 16 years before sharing it more broadly.
