Ely was sailing with his wife and son when the boat capsized in 25-knot winds. His wife forgot to release a line, causing repeated capsizing. Ely became tangled in lines underwater and couldn't hold his breath any longer, so he gave up. Suddenly, overwhelming peace came over him and he found himself outside the boat looking toward his son. When the safety boat asked if his son could see him, the son said no, despite Ely being directly in his line of vision. Ely then instantly appeared at the front of the boat watching the safety boat with his wife in it. As they pulled the boat upright, he was suddenly back inside on top of the lines. He appeared extremely pale and weak afterward. His wife had terminal cancer so he never told her about the experience. The profound peace came from absence of bodily stimulus and not breathing until returning. He experienced instantaneous movement between locations and complete invisibility to multiple witnesses who were looking directly at him. The experience eliminated his fear of death and gave him certainty about continuation after death.

--- Biblical Summary ---
Biblical elements: The out-of-body experience during near-death aligns with biblical concepts of spirit-body separation. The overwhelming peace reflects "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding" (Philippians 4:7). Being invisible to others while conscious parallels accounts of spiritual beings unseen by human eyes unless divinely opened (2 Kings 6:17). The instantaneous movement between locations reflects spiritual realm properties transcending physical limitations. The experience strengthened faith in afterlife continuation.

Unbiblical elements: None identified. While the experience lacks explicit religious imagery, it contains no elements contradicting biblical teaching. The absence of typical NDE features (tunnel, light, deceased relatives) while still experiencing consciousness beyond physical death actually strengthens its authenticity as a genuine spiritual experience unconditioned by cultural expectations.
