Leonel had just undergone cardiac catheterization with stent placement for a 90% blocked left anterior descending artery. The procedure went well initially, with a vascular closure device used to seal the femoral artery access point. Hours later, while sitting up to brush his teeth in preparation for discharge, Leonel heard a loud pop from his right hip - so loud his wife heard it from 10 feet away. Severe pain radiated immediately as the closure device had failed, causing internal hemorrhaging.
As Leonel fell back on the bed applying pressure to his hip, he experienced an out-of-body separation. From a position near the ceiling, he observed himself lying properly in bed with eyes shut and mouth wide open. He saw a large male nurse in white clothing applying extreme pressure to his hip area, noting specifically a bald spot on top of the man's head. He could see his wife weeping behind the nurse and felt completely detached from the scene, observing without emotion despite knowing he was dying. Suddenly, Leonel felt himself falling from the ceiling with gravity pulling him down, experiencing a strange sensation in his stomach. His perspective shifted from looking down to being slammed back into his body. He was then looking up at the male nurse's face while feeling excruciating pain from the pressure being applied. When the nurse turned to speak to Leonel's wife after controlling the bleeding, Leonel saw the same bald spot he had observed from above. This veridical observation of a previously unknown nurse's bald spot, visible only from above, haunts Leonel as proof of his out-of-body experience during this life-threatening hemorrhage.
