Kenneth was serving in a military platoon when their convoy was targeted in an ambush attack using an improvised explosive device (IED). A suspicious car had passed them and dropped off two women before speeding away, which alerted the platoon to potential danger. As they continued to another outpost, the lead truck triggered an IED that exploded 3-5 seconds later, with Kenneth's truck taking the main force of the blast. The explosion sent wheels with tires and fuel tanks flying hundreds of feet outward.
During the explosion, Kenneth found himself looking down on his body from above, observing all the destruction below. He thought "Man, they got me! This is where my story ends" as he watched the devastation. He could see the scattered vehicle parts and debris from his elevated perspective. Unlike many NDEs, he did not see any light or tunnel, but remained conscious and aware while separated from his physical form. Kenneth made a conscious decision to return, thinking "No, this isn't how it's going to end for me." He then found himself back in his body on what he calls his "pedestal." The experience was entirely distressing rather than peaceful. The aftermath has been severe - Kenneth is now 100% disabled and continues to suffer from nightmares. He wakes up in tears daily and requires medication to achieve any normal sleep. Despite the trauma, his out-of-body observation of the explosion scene from above remains vivid in his memory.
