Susanne was struck by a bus whose driver pushed the brakes too hard, throwing her through the aisle and wrapping her around a hydraulic bar. Initially suspected of having a fractured rib, she actually sustained massive internal bleeding and destruction of three organs. At 2am she was rushed to a trauma-equipped hospital where she lost consciousness upon arrival.
She found herself seeing her body lying on a narrow stretcher barely covered, with a CT scanner's big metal circle at her feet. She stood about three meters away at the border where darkness began, watching six frozen figures around the CT. Her body was struggling for air with arms pulled above her head in an unbearable position. She wondered where she was if that was her body down there, feeling both patient and bystander. A shadow shifted between her soul and body, resembling a human but without mass or form, delivering a message and cutting her connection to her body. Crystal-clear feelings flooded her - loneliness became security, exposure became protection, fear became confidence. An older slim doctor with fuzzy hair and sad eyes stood at the head of the stretcher, lifted his head and looked directly into her eyes as if he knew a lost soul was standing there, smiling softly. She later found his picture in the hospital database - someone she had never met. A beautiful round arch gate appeared in the darkness on her left, with light that outshone everything, acting as a beacon of hope. She was attracted and gliding toward it when something yanked her back. She woke in the ICU feeling regret that she wasn't allowed to continue, believing a part of her soul was lost at the border. She has no fear of death but deep regret about not being allowed to cross over.
