At age 4, Steven was at Alum Rock Park in San Jose with his family at a large indoor pool. His sister wanted their father to take her down the slide, and his mother was told to watch him. He wandered to the poolside where kids told him to jump in and they would help him swim. He jumped into the deep end and sank to the bottom, looking up at the arms and legs of kids above.
As he sank, he felt warm and comfortable, like being wrapped in a soft warm blanket. Then he was up in the rafters of the building looking down without remembering having a physical body. There was a warm something behind him that spoke into his head saying "You have to go back." He tried to turn to see what or who was there but couldn't turn to see it. From the rafters, he could see chaos of people around a boy lying near the pool side, who was himself. The view from above showed the rescue scene clearly. He felt very comfortable and happy in the rafters and did not want to go back but followed the voice in his head. He woke up at the poolside vomiting and getting his breath back. It took until his 40s to ask his mother what happened and realize he had drowned and come back. He felt incredible peace and joy during the experience and maintains that it was as real as any other life event, remaining vivid in his memory even at his current age.
