Shawn was working with his father cutting trees when he cut a bent-over green tree that was pinned by a larger fallen tree. His father warned him not to cut it but it was too late. The tree sprung back up like a spring, striking him square in the face with baseball-bat force, throwing him backwards six feet where he did a back-flop on the forest floor. His father thought he was dead on the spot.
Immediately after his father left him in a chair to call for help, Shawn felt he was standing next to where he had fallen. A line of past friends and relatives came toward him, led by his paternal grandfather who had died months earlier. Some he recognized, others he felt he knew. They came down over a 5-foot stone wall as if it was just an easy step, appearing to float. The temperature was absolutely perfect and he felt comfortable. His grandfather approached with a greeting, asked what happened, and told him it wasn't his time yet. The perfect temperature and the floating approach of the deceased relatives over the wall were particularly vivid. He observed them coming from an unusual angle that would normally require a longer route around the wall. Shawn woke to his father shouting his name and wiping blood from his face. He was rushed to the hospital with a fractured skull, broken nose, and concussion, staying for observation. Since the experience, he has never been scared of dying, loves helping others, and became warm and outgoing despite facial scars. He believes there is more after death and will see loved ones again.
