At age 6, Shana experienced an NDE during emergency appendectomy under general anesthesia. Her parents were told the appendix would have ruptured within twenty minutes, and after surgery the surgeon told them she had nearly died, which she attributes to the anesthesia.
A tunnel opened before her that she seemed to enter - black with glowing electric lines and successively narrowing blue-green rings of light going deeper into the tunnel. There was no single bright light at the end, and the tunnel was to her front right with a slight upward gradient. Four or five women who were not elderly approached her, dressed in white floor-length dresses. The view of the tunnel and approaching women remains vivid and focused even at age 85. The women seemed focused on her in a kindly way, with the leftmost woman connecting most completely with her. She experienced sharp vision, positive emotions, feelings of peace and happiness, and saw the successive rings of blue-green light encircling the tunnel walls and roof. The experience removed any fear of death while giving her personal confidence in facing mortal life. She has feared the process of dying but not death itself, maintaining an adventurous "why not?" attitude toward life. The NDE has provided her with enormous faith and liberation throughout her life, enabling her to cope with challenges and accomplish things she might never have attempted otherwise.
