On October 31, 2021, Ken was mountain biking in remote San Mateo County when he suffered a heart attack halfway through a 20-mile ride. A cardiologist in the group diagnosed him, and when Ken felt a heavy thunk in his chest - the first cardiac arrest - he lost consciousness. A park ranger arrived with a defibrillator and resuscitated him, but he arrested multiple more times. After helicopter evacuation with continued arrests and resuscitations, Ken awoke floating in beautiful, tranquil darkness with no sense of self or memory. He felt overwhelming euphoria, peacefulness, and safety while observing brilliant scintillating orbs of blue and white light. The colors were beautiful and filled him with peace. He sensed gravity from a deeper void trying to pull him in, but hovered alongside the glowing orbs. Gradually, he became aware of a distant story unfolding about a man in danger being urgently helped. After long internal argument, he realized this man was himself in the helicopter. The world slowly materialized around him as he returned. A practicing Buddhist, the experience has deepened his spiritual practice and transformed his values toward gratitude, empathy, and helping others. Financial gain no longer feels important; he wants to live simply and present in each moment.
