At age 18, Jacob attempted suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning in his garage on October 31, 1988, after years of suffering from dermatillomania. He experienced an immediate out-of-body state, floating above the car and watching his mother try unsuccessfully to pull his heavy body out before calling 911. His soul then descended rapidly through a dark void for about ten minutes until reaching a sudden stop, immobilized in a quagmire. Unable to move or scream, he saw a brilliant light approaching from his peripheral vision that stopped five feet away and communicated telepathically. The light reviewed his entire 18 years in ten seconds, revealing he had not been a good person. A chasm then opened between him and the light, from which came millions of agonized voices, hideous laughter, and the smell of rotting flesh - the gates of hell. The light, whom Jacob recognized as Jesus, offered him a choice: stay at hell's gates until judgment or return to life in a painful, disfigured form. He felt the painful sensation he would experience if he returned. He chose to return and his soul rapidly ascended back to his body in the hospital after being in a coma for four days. He suffered permanent brain damage affecting dopamine reception, resulting in Parkinson's-like syndrome that has persisted for 35 years.
