Gregory was an 18-year-old ROTC cadet at U.S. Army basic training when he contracted severe pneumonia. After being hospitalized with both lungs involved, he was released but remained ill. Two weeks later at military school, he was admitted to the infirmary with continuing pneumonia symptoms. He was given antibiotics and Lomotil, to which he had a severe hypersensitive reaction, causing his heart to race, extreme vertigo, and loss of consciousness. Gregory experienced an out-of-body phenomenon where he observed from above as medical staff performed CPR on his body. He felt extreme calm and no fear, with a much larger field of awareness and perfect vision despite normally having 20/400 eyesight. He saw a doctor in a blue jacket enter the room and take charge of his resuscitation. After successful revival, he learned he had nearly died from the medication reaction. The experience left him with definite knowledge that death is peaceful and nothing to fear.
