Dr. Samuel R, in his late 50s, experienced an NDE during a white water rafting accident on the Gauley River in West Virginia in September 2010. When the raft capsized in dangerous Class 5/6 rapids, he was trapped underwater in a hydraulic (like a spinning washing machine). Despite the life-threatening situation, he felt eerie calm and overwhelming peace. He then saw a white light and both his deceased parents appeared (they had died the previous year within six months of each other). He felt extreme euphoria and pleaded with them to let him stay with them, but they told him it wasn't his time yet and to go back. He argued with them but eventually returned. After resurfacing, he found a fellow rafter in distress and punched him to break his shock, helping save them both. The experience was characterized by complete silence during the encounter despite the deafening rapids, time distortion (brief moment felt like eternity), heightened visual clarity underwater, and overwhelming feelings of love and joy. Seasoned rafting guides later confirmed his experience was genuine.
