Ryan, who couldn't swim, was pushed into a lake from a dock and frantically struggled to get above water before experiencing clinical death. He found himself floating above the water, looking down at the settling surface where his hair swirled inches below. His vision then switched direction to dock height toward shore, where he watched his cousin running down the dock and jumping in to rescue him. He woke up crying in the back of his mother's car as they drove away. During the drive, while looking up at the sky through the window, Ryan suddenly left his body again and found himself above the treetops, looking down while flying along at the same speed as their car. He observed the old car's rusted roof and could see all around - houses, boats on trailers, garbage cans beside houses, and cars approaching on the road in the distance. He could see in any direction at any distance simply by willing it. Then he returned to his body in the car. Both out-of-body experiences were characterized by incredible peace and calm, contrasting sharply with his usual state of fear and uncertainty living with an abusive alcoholic father. During the experiences, he felt completely detached and unemotional, experiencing a peace he had never known before. The drowning incident resulted in clinical death with cessation of breathing or heart function, followed by successful resuscitation.
