Robert was being treated for diabetes in another country and had an unknown bleeding ulcer. One night he passed out in the bathroom and his wife drove him to the hospital 2.5 hours away. Upon arrival at the emergency room, he was given a wheelchair instead of the requested stretcher and passed out again. He heard a familiar woman's voice (their family friend) repeatedly saying "He's not breathing" while a man insisted "He's breathing." Despite being unconscious, Robert felt no pain or concern and found himself outside his body observing the emergency room. All beds were full, and he watched medical staff remove a young girl around 7 years old to make room for him. He observed himself on a stretcher being rushed for treatment, surrounded by at least three nurses preparing the defibrillator and cutting his pants off lengthwise. Suddenly realizing they were talking about him, he returned to his body and desperately tried to move a finger to communicate. Shortly after succeeding in moving his finger, he was able to communicate with the staff. The experience was characterized by complete detachment and lack of emotion while observing the emergency room activities from outside his body. He underwent surgery on Saturday, three days after the Wednesday incident.
