Rickalan, a Marine private, was driving with friends to visit family when their 1972 Plymouth Trail Duster lost its brakes descending a steep mountain grade. After careening downhill for two miles at increasing speed, they crashed into an enormous pine tree. Rickalan suffered a severe head wound requiring 192 stitches, a broken C-1 vertebra, and a broken finger. Despite his injuries and confusion from blood loss, he climbed out and attempted to get help, becoming lost in the woods at night. He encountered what he perceived as Marine snipers in trees who wouldn't respond to his pleas for help. Exhausted, he collapsed on a moss-covered log and lost consciousness. He woke feeling warm, safe, and deeply rested with the sun directly overhead. Following what seemed to be the sun leading him, he found a path to the road where state troopers had been searching for him. When a trooper found him, Rickalan initially didn't realize he had been in an accident. Upon sitting down, the trooper noticed his broken neck. In the ambulance, Rickalan experienced an out-of-body experience where he stood on a berm watching the scene below, seeing his injured body and realizing "that's me." He was then pulled toward the ambulance and slammed back into his body, screaming in pain as someone yelled "He's back!" The experience left him feeling that floating outside his body was natural and familiar, as if he was "used to not having feet."
