On September 21, 2021, Richard fell ill at work with chest pains, shortness of breath, and numbness before collapsing. Paramedics stabilized him and transported him to the emergency room where he was initially awake and responsive. Shortly after admission, he went into cardiac arrest. CPR was performed for 55 minutes and he was shocked with a defibrillator six times total. During the resuscitation, Richard experienced intense feelings of conflict and chaos. Between the first and second shocks, he began to feel peace in the distance, described like morning or evening rays beaming from clouds with a majestic feeling. He could feel his wife needing him on the other side, creating a torn feeling. After being shocked again, the chaotic conflict returned even more intensely. He could feel his wife calling for him but was tired of the chaos and wanted peace. As he moved toward the lights, his grandmother suddenly appeared before him. He asked her to take him away to end the chaos. She smiled, wagged her finger, and said "No, no, no, Ricky. You have to go back" using her pet name for him. When he said he didn't like this, she responded "I know." He was then shocked multiple more times and returned to his body, looking up at the medical staff. Interestingly, his wife reported that from her perspective there was no chaos in the room - everything was organized, methodical, and orderly during the 55-minute resuscitation.
