Rebecca was at a Florida beach with her family when a red flag warned against entering the water due to dangerous conditions. Despite the warning, the 13-year-old followed her father and his friend into the ocean. The current was extremely strong, making it difficult to walk. She couldn't keep up with the adults and they went ahead without hearing her calls over the powerful wind. A wave took her under, and each time she tried to surface for air, another wave pulled her down. She was trapped in a rip tide, unable to escape the cycle of being pulled under repeatedly. As she was taken under again, Rebecca accepted that she was dying and felt profound peace. She thought that death wasn't as bad as she had imagined. Then she experienced being both in and out of her body simultaneously - she came out of her body and watched herself spinning beneath the waves while also experiencing the spinning from within. In this moment, she remembered a story about two mice falling into milk, where one gave up and drowned while the other kept swimming until it churned butter and escaped. She asked herself which mouse she would be. Remembering advice from TV about swimming parallel to shore when caught at sea, she returned fully to her body and swam hard parallel to the shore toward the sound of a child playing, whose voice became her beacon of hope. She successfully made it back to shore, though she was emotionally hurt that neither her mother on the beach nor her father in the water had noticed she was gone.
