During a severe snowstorm, Portia lost control of her vehicle on ice and collided head-on with a tractor trailer. She has no memory of the actual collision itself. Instead, she found herself in a dark room lying on a couch with her head on her deceased mother's lap. Her mother had died 1-2 years prior in a car accident near the same location. Her mother was caressing her forehead, and Portia felt an indescribable sense of peace and overwhelming love. She told her mother it was warm there and she felt so much love. Her mother insisted she had to go back, that she had more to do. Despite Portia begging to stay with her mother, she was told she must return. She then woke up to paramedics using the Jaws of Life to extract her from the wreckage. She asked where her mother was. The paramedic explained she had been in an accident and her forehead had hit the rearview mirror, noting how fortunate she was that the stem didn't impale her head. She lost consciousness again briefly. Remarkably, she survived despite her car being completely crushed in the head-on collision with the tractor trailer.
