Pooja was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a condition that attacks the peripheral nervous system causing complete paralysis. She had been in the ICU for seven days, intubated and on life support with a ventilator. On the seventh day, she experienced a life-threatening event when her SPO2 levels dropped below 30 for unexplained reasons, severely limiting oxygen supply to her brain. She went unconscious hearing the monitor alarms and realized her time to die had come.
During her near-death experience, Pooja felt herself floating in a vacuum or void, experiencing absolute peace and calm she had never known in earthly life. She felt no attachments to anyone or anything, yet this detachment was not distressing but profoundly peaceful. She was light as a feather floating in air, experiencing this state for approximately 30 seconds. While unconscious, she heard her sister calling her name and asking her to come back, even though her sister was in the waiting area outside the ICU, not physically present in the room. Despite the peace she was experiencing, she didn't want to return. After about 30 seconds, she returned to her body to find monitors beeping, surrounded by doctors and paramedics who had successfully resuscitated her. She was immediately taken for CT scans while still on life support. The medical team later told her family they suspected a blood clot had traveled to her heart, stopping oxygen to the brain, though they could never determine the exact cause. Months later, when discussing her experience with a senior law partner who had also survived GBS, she learned he too had experienced an NDE, though his was more of a traditional out-of-body experience. The experience transformed her perspective on life and death, making her more compassionate and less attached to material concerns.
