In 1971, Pietre was a passenger in a car driven by his teenage friend Franco, who had borrowed his mother's vehicle for joyriding on a backroad. Franco was driving too fast and lost control, causing the car to roll seven times and create a large cloud of dust before coming to rest on its wheels. During this violent accident, Pietre had a remarkable out-of-body experience that convinced him of the separation between consciousness and the physical body.
Pietre watched the entire accident unfold from approximately 100 feet above and behind the vehicle. He observed the car rolling seven times with complete detachment, experiencing no emotion or surprise, only hearing a strange "zooming" sound or sensation. When he returned to awareness in his body, he found himself on his hands and knees on the floor where the back seat had been, with blood splashing everywhere. Despite the severity of the accident and his injuries, he experienced no pain and remains convinced he wasn't actually in his body during the impact. This brief but profound experience left Pietre with permanent scars but more importantly, with an unshakeable conviction about the nature of consciousness and death. He realized that his body was merely a machine with the brain serving as its motherboard, while his soul existed entirely separate from that physical mechanism. The experience eliminated his fear of death, as he understood that even if he had died from a harder impact, he wouldn't have felt anything. Pietre's OBE during this life-threatening accident provided him with direct experiential knowledge that consciousness can exist independently of the physical body.
