At age 12, Patricia ran ahead to open a car door for departing guests on a dark, icy evening. She slipped and fell head-first into the passenger door, losing consciousness immediately. She remembers the warmth of the female guest's fur coat and the attempts by both guests and her father to lift and carry her into the house, where they laid her on the living room couch. What followed was an extraordinary out-of-body experience that would forever change her perspective on death and the afterlife.
Patricia rose above her body and floated midway to the ceiling, observing the man and woman trying to revive her unconscious form below. She felt completely detached as she watched them work on her body. She then floated into the dining room where her parents were frantically trying to call emergency services, with her mother crying and misdialing the number. Patricia heard her mother say "Oh Fred, I can't get the number right." She attempted to comfort her mother by touching her head and saying "It's okay mom. I'm all right," then returned to observe the revival attempts. She noticed a hole appear in the ceiling and entered it, finding herself in a bright white environment where human forms approached through misty light. A short, heavy-set woman with gray hair emerged from the light with a huge smile, calling Patricia by name. Though Patricia didn't recognize her, she knew this person was important and loved her deeply. They embraced, and more forms began approaching, but the woman told Patricia it wasn't her time and she must return. Despite Patricia's protests and desire to stay in that peaceful, loving space, the woman turned her around and insisted she return. Patricia then found herself back in her body with no memory of the experience until weeks later. Her mother later confirmed she had felt something touch her head while trying to dial emergency.
