Nathan was hospitalized in October 2019 with what was initially diagnosed as pneumonia but developed into a severe respiratory crisis. After days in the ICU, his condition deteriorated to the point where his lungs resembled early COVID patients' imaging, though this predated the pandemic. He was sedated, placed on high-flow oxygen, and underwent extensive testing including bronchoscopy. His condition became so critical that his parents were called to make medical decisions, and he was transferred to a specialized facility. During transport, he experienced his first cardiac arrest and was successfully resuscitated by the code team.
While in an induced coma, Nathan experienced traveling through a tunnel of swirling, bright lights in colors he had never seen before. The vivid lights contrasted sharply with the total blackness surrounding the tunnel. He moved headfirst through this tunnel without a sensation of falling. Throughout the experience, he felt a humming or vibration sensation coming from his chest, which he initially attributed to doctors using a suction device to clean his lungs. This sensation gave him comfort, believing his lungs were finally being cleared. When Nathan recovered and asked about the procedures, doctors informed him they had never performed any lung cleaning procedure as it would have been too invasive. His lungs had mysteriously cleared just one day before he was to be placed on ECMO and listed for lung transplant. Nathan believes the buzzing sensation and tunnel experience were connected to a healing process beyond normal medicine. He experienced two more cardiac arrests during recovery but had no experiences during those events, making his tunnel experience during the first arrest particularly significant. The experience left him with the conviction that he was somehow transported to receive healing that medical science couldn't provide.
