Dan contracted three strains of dengue fever while working in Mexico, which deteriorated into meningoencephalitis by the time he reached an Atlanta hospital. His brain felt on fire, teeth chattering uncontrollably, with severe photosensitivity and excruciating pain he interpreted as torture. During a spinal tap, the needle's pain sent him over the edge. He found himself in the ceiling corner watching the doctor draw fluid. When the needle was withdrawn, he shot back through his body and out the other side, floating away in peaceful, calming blackness. A disembodied voice said "You understand you are dying now," giving him a choice to continue or return. Thinking of his wife Susan and daughters still at the Texas border, he chose to return. He floated back through levels of darkness, resting at each stage, gradually regaining hearing, then light, then consciousness. Medical staff tested his orientation but he initially couldn't speak. The experience transformed him oppositely from typical NDEs - rather than becoming religious, he lost need for answers to big questions, content to "let the mystery be." He became an artist and writer, creating 3D paintings of his NDE visions. His nights filled with mystical dreams requiring him to hold the bed frame to avoid floating away, having lost the sense of bodily containment.
