Cynthia went to a New York City hospital for routine surgery involving a new procedure. After receiving Valium in the hallway, she was given too much anesthesia during the operation. While under, she witnessed the surgeon arguing with the anesthesiologist, hearing the surgeon say "You killed her! You gave her too much." She then floated outside her body, observing herself on the table and the two doctors beside her. Initially frightened by floating at the top of the room, she saw a blindingly bright light. A male voice she calls "the gatekeeper" repeatedly directed her "That way" toward a dark tunnel. Looking left as instructed, she saw a long line of people entering a brightly lit place filled with overlapping voices. She locked eyes with one sad woman with straight, short brown hair in the line. Despite the gatekeeper's insistence, Cynthia pleaded to return, saying her three children were waiting for her. The gatekeeper finally warned her: "The next time you come no matter how you beg and plead you will not return." She was immediately thrust back into her body, ripping out IVs and confronting the startled doctors about killing her, repeating their exact conversation. She lost significant blood and kept losing consciousness. She left despite weakness, fearing the gatekeeper's warning about no return next time.
