Dr. Boris was hospitalized in February 1988 for chest pains and suffered a heart attack while in intensive care. Before open-heart surgery in Houston, he experienced severe pain rated 9/10 and died multiple times on February 18th. During these episodes, he found himself in absolute darkness with full awareness of being dead, feeling nihilistic emptiness. He then experienced repeated out-of-body episodes where his body rose through hospital floors, creating holes he could look through to see doctors and nurses working on him below. This happened 5-6 times, with him descending back into his body each time. In one episode, he floated toward a dark tunnel where a man in white with symbols on his jacket beckoned him from a cave entrance. Boris interpreted this as a demon and made an effort to return. He remained conscious throughout, responding to medical staff about pain levels. After surgery, he developed a more spiritual perspective on life and stronger religious beliefs.
