In July 1993, 17-year-old Bren L sustained a Grade 3 concussion after falling from her bicycle while turning too sharply in a cul-de-sac. She was not wearing a helmet and experienced brief retrograde amnesia. Between falling and regaining consciousness, she had a near-death experience that she describes as brief but profound.
When she fell, her consciousness was instantly brought somewhere else. She could sense rather than see clearly, having knowledge that she was somewhere else with awareness of her identity and a sense of having a greater purpose, though not knowing specifically what it was. She felt the presence of others around her who felt familiar, though she had no deceased relatives she could recognize. She was embarrassed about dying from falling off a bike and asked if she was dead. She was told "no" and that she would have to go back, which she accepted with understanding that she had more to do. The setting was described as having pale warmth, ephemeral, with her being in a light that was everywhere. She felt she was in a clearly mystical, unearthly realm. The emotions experienced were embarrassment, relief, understanding, and validation. She came to consciousness on the asphalt and later recalled the NDE while being x-rayed, nearly in tears as she realized what had happened. Thirty years later, she still wonders about her purpose. The experience changed her from atheist to being open to spirituality, though she doesn't follow any particular religion. She has since experienced multiple out-of-body experiences, prophetic dreams, dreams about the dead, and synchronicities.
