At age 16, Amera S was dying in a hospital life support unit on February 26, 1979, during an acute medical crisis. She had known for several days that she was dying and was at peace with it, welcoming death. She was moved to the glass room next to the nurses' desk reserved for the sickest patients, surrounded by machines with frequently sounding alarms. Her veins were rupturing from IV fluids due to phlebitis. She spent three days drifting in and out of consciousness on morphine.
On the morning she died, she was the only patient left in the unit. She overheard staff discussing a solar eclipse and leaving briefly to view it. When the unit became silent, all the alarms went off with their distinctive sounds at different intervals. As she listened, she floated up and saw a tunnel parallel to the floor. She floated feet-first through the tunnel for about 20 feet, feeling fine with no fear. She woke up surrounded by doctors and medical staff who had resuscitated her. Remarkably, she came back with knowledge of a specific medication that could save her life - one the medical staff were unaware of but was available in the hospital pharmacy. When administered, it ended her medical crisis. Years later at university, she saw a display about solar eclipses including the one from when she was sixteen, confirming her memories were accurate. She notes that witnessing the eclipse display helped her realize her memories of the experience were completely accurate, suggesting they may have been somewhat repressed before. The experience left her with no fear of death and a feeling of happy anticipation about eventually "going home." She felt she may have been sent back for a purpose, possibly to share her knowledge of these experiences.
