Three-year-old Amber W drowned on February 24, 1998, after falling into a cistern while playing outside in warm clothes and boots. Her mother was experiencing a dissociative disorder episode at the time. Amber was trapped underwater for at least ten minutes, unconscious and without a heartbeat for over five minutes. Her father, a former Navy medic, had just gone to get tools when he returned and asked where Amber was. After frantically searching for five minutes, he felt a force hit him hard in the chest with an instant knowing she was in the cistern. He pulled her from the dark, murky water where her waterlogged clothes had caused her to sink to the bottom.
During her near-death experience, Amber floated above her body, seeing and hearing her father repeatedly yelling her name and telling her to breathe. She saw herself lying there but chose to go further away, following a bright white light. As she grew closer to the light, her father's voice became more distant. She then heard a voice tell her she had to return because it wasn't her time yet and she needed to listen to her daddy. When telling her grandmother about the experience after waking from a 3-day coma, Amber identified the voice as Mary, her great-grandmother (her grandmother's mother) whose picture was by the grandmother's bed - a name the three-year-old had never been told. Her father immediately performed CPR after pulling her out. She was airlifted to the hospital and remained in a coma for three days. Her grandmother was the only one present when she woke and shared her experience. The grandmother was startled that a three-year-old could know her deceased mother's name. The experience gave Amber belief in an afterlife, having seen "a smidgen of the possibilities of life after death." Her parents lost custody following the drowning incident.
