Adam W, an 18-year-old male struggling with depression and anxiety, attempted suicide by overdosing on pills and alcohol. After going to sleep, he woke to the sound of his heart beating extremely hard and fast, realizing his body was shutting down. He had difficulty breathing and felt his brain was "fried."
Suddenly, Adam experienced an out-of-body perspective, seeing his own face and body from above, approximately 5-6 feet higher. He observed his eyes were open and he looked dead. He witnessed about 20 or more people standing around his bed, though he could only see the tops of their heads. During this state, he had a vision of his deceased grandmother standing in a dark graveyard, wearing a white gown. She appeared stern and angry, communicating to him without words that it wasn't his time, his mother would be hurt, and he would be going back. The communication seemed to come directly to his consciousness rather than through audible speech. His grandmother appeared to purposefully stop what was happening. Following this encounter, Adam returned to his body with the knowledge that he needed to call for help. He managed to call an ambulance and was taken to the hospital where he recovered. Adam reflects that he believes he died for a split-second or a few seconds. The experience was neither pleasant nor distressing, but matter-of-fact. His vision during the OBE was different, described as "super-3D." The experience has left him more open to spirituality and the possibility of God, though he remains uncertain about many aspects of what occurred.
