Matthew contracted COVID-19 during Black Friday shopping and developed severe symptoms including terrible headaches. After initial minor symptoms, he began experiencing racing heart and breathing difficulties at night. He was hospitalized with atrial fibrillation on December 14th and underwent cardioversion by defibrillation on December 16th. At 2:00 AM on December 17th, his heart went back into A-Fib at 250+ beats per minute and stopped, causing him to flatline.
During the cardiac arrest, Matthew witnessed events from slightly above his body, unable to see his physical form but observing everything around him. At the foot of his bed stood a young nurse in an old-style uniform with white paper hat, arms crossed. He joked with her asking who she would write up, causing her to uncross her arms and walk out, never to return. Matthew woke with a jolt from being paddled the second time. He recognized the nurse as his Guardian Angel who left once she knew he would survive. He was transferred by ambulance to the main hospital on December 18th and received a pacemaker/defibrillator on December 21st. The experience brought incredible peace, joy, and unity with the world. Matthew lost all fear of death and gained understanding about himself and others. He now lives more in the present and has greater appreciation for relationships.
