Fourteen-year-old Lon was swimming in Maui, attempting a two-mile ocean swim to a cliff jumping spot called Iron Maiden. About a mile from shore in deep water with strong undercurrents, he began experiencing severe muscle cramps and exhaustion. His body went cold, limbs became numb and stopped responding, and he began sinking into the dark ocean depths. After inhaling seawater in desperation, time suddenly stopped.
In the frozen moment underwater, Lon experienced a complete life review seeing memories from infancy through his current age. He relived happy memories, loving moments, and even sad times with overwhelming gratitude for the life experience. Years of memories passed while time stood still, filling him with profound appreciation for every aspect of life he had been allowed to experience. He began praying with tears of joy, thanking God for the beautiful gift of existence. Then he heard a clear voice say "Stand on the rock." Time suddenly resumed with a rush of pressure and sound as he found himself above water with renewed energy. With his friend's help who had returned to find him, they searched and discovered a moss-covered rock pillar about 30 feet away, waist-high underwater. Standing on this rock restored his strength completely. After recovery on the rock, Lon continued to Iron Maiden where he cliff jumped for hours with renewed vigor. The experience left him with permanent gratitude for life and a sense that the ocean at Black Rock, known locally as "the gateway to the spirit world," still calls to him decades later.
