On December 27, 2002, Darlene was violently attacked by her ex-fiancé who strangled her in his car. He pinned her body with his full weight, pressing his forearm on her neck until she stopped breathing. Her body shook uncontrollably, then became completely immobile. She left her body and watched him from outside - observing him climbing off her, poking and kicking her body, trying to make it move, and ordering her to get out of his car. Remarkably, she received knowledge that her disabled wheelchair-bound son would have a girlfriend and children. When she gasped back to life, he pulled her from the car and she screamed at him before he fled with her engagement ring.
