Tawnie nearly drowned on June 5, 2021, when her canoe overturned in a river current. Trapped underwater and inhaling water, she fought desperately for her life while being repeatedly pulled under. During this life-threatening struggle, her thoughts raced incredibly fast as she envisioned her family finding her lifeless body - her husband pulling her out, her best friend learning the news, and her family's grief. Despite the heartbreak, she had an overwhelming feeling they would be okay without her. As she faced death, she saw the brightest light she'd ever seen - whitish yellow - and believed she was approaching Heaven's gate. Though she felt blind physically, her mind played vivid memories and visions. She heard God's voice clearly tell her "It is not time yet," after which her husband's voice broke through, directing her to a branch that saved her life. She pulled herself out with superhuman strength despite her weakened state. The experience was both traumatic and peaceful - while the drowning was terrifying, approaching death brought a sense of comfort knowing where she was going was beautiful, safe, and peaceful. The experience exponentially strengthened her faith in God, whom she credits with saving her. She was baptized afterward and became deeply involved in church. However, she faced painful dismissal from family who witnessed the event, with some laughing and calling her dramatic. She suffered PTSD symptoms including water noises when closing her eyes and recurring drowning nightmares, but maintains that God gave her a second chance for a greater purpose.
