Rick underwent back surgery in October 1995 when he suddenly stopped breathing and his heart stopped during the procedure. He experienced an out-of-body state where he felt like a large golden cloud moving through the ceiling, observing the frantic medical team below. He saw a beautiful blue sky and felt an ancient, timeless sensation with overwhelming warmth and love, recognizing he had been there before. He could see 360 degrees and realized everything "down there" was make-believe while the spiritual realm was real. Despite not wanting to return, he was suddenly compressed back into his body. During his 6-week recovery, Rick experienced persistent paranormal phenomena including waking at exactly 3:15 AM daily and feeling a warm, friendly presence constantly with him. His doctor confirmed other patients reported similar post-NDE experiences. On the final night of week 6, he felt a crowd of presences in his apartment and when he asked for a sign, his stereo turned on at full volume. The next morning, the presences were gone. This experience profoundly changed his perspective on life and death, leaving him with the understanding that the spiritual realm is more real than physical existence.
