James experienced an NDE in August 1963 at age 9 when accidentally shot in the head with a pellet rifle. His friend had just received the rifle for his birthday and was showing it off. While playing "draw" with the safety initially on, the friend forgot to re-engage it after shooting at birds. He aimed at James saying "right between the eyes" and pulled the trigger.
Everything went black, then James saw bright light above him and headed toward it. He heard noise below and realized he was at the ceiling of the deck. Turning to look down, he saw his body lying on the deck. His friend's grandfather walked out and exclaimed, "Look what you did! You killed him!" causing the friend to moan sadly and run to hide in the creek. James didn't think he was dead and floated back into his body instantly, saying "I think the bullet bounced off." The pellet had gone through his thick-frame glasses (which saved it from going deeper), through his eye socket, scraped his retina, and lodged about an inch into his brain. He heard his glasses hitting the deck as he fell and felt the broken glass against his eye. He was afraid to open his eyes to avoid damaging them and felt the dried blood on his face as they brought him on a stretcher to the ambulance. The experience involved heightened consciousness and faster thoughts while out of body, with James more worried about his friend who thought he had killed him than about himself. Surgery was performed that night. Twenty-five years later, while living in the same house where the shooting occurred, he had another more profound NDE where he went into the light. The experience started breaking him out of his shell, reducing his fear of making mistakes and increasing his self-esteem.
