Gary, a kindergarten teacher, experienced a profound NDE in June 1980 while living alone in the Arizona desert. After school ended, he became increasingly ill with what would later be diagnosed as severe valley fever, a potentially fatal condition. Being stubborn and not believing in doctors, he waited nearly two weeks before attempting to make medicinal tea from desert marigold he had collected. The herb was completely covered with mold, and immediately after drinking it, his body went into convulsions with a roaring sound in his head before he passed out, wondering if he was dying.
He awakened to heightened awareness without his physical body, realizing he must have died. The feeling was unbelievably good with profound euphoria. A spirit being guided him through a complete life review where his memories formed a panoramic circle around him. He relived his entire life including long-forgotten and seemingly insignificant memories. With the spirit being's help, he gained understanding of the larger picture - how his actions affected others and why things happened to him. Everything seemed perfect without sadness or regret, and he understood that things happen for reasons we seldom know at the time. The spirit being told him it wasn't his time to die because he had much yet to learn and experience, humorously saying "You haven't really learned anything yet." When he protested, he lost consciousness and awakened 30 hours later (not the few hours he thought) with a jolt, knowing he was healed though still weak. Medical tests later confirmed he'd had severe valley fever that could have been fatal without treatment. The doctor was puzzled that he recovered without treatment. Every day since has been different - he lives with deeper appreciation for life, more awareness and thankfulness, more respect for all beings, more conscientiousness about interactions with others, more humor in life, and no fear of death. The experience occurred before he had read any other NDE accounts.
